THE GIFT OF READING – 350 NEW BOOKS DONATED TO LEE F. JACKSON
The kindergartners and first graders at the Lee F. Jackson Elementary School recently received the gift of 350 books from publisher Simon & Schuster thanks to the efforts of the school’s PTA. The books were distributed to the children in the school by members of the PTA and they were introduced to the children by the school’s IB Coordinator and Reading Teacher Valarie Williams. Members of the PTA took turns reading excerpts from the books, which were Emily’s Art, Turkey Bowl, With Love, Little Red Hen and Little Panda. Each child and classroom library received a book. Children picked which book they wanted. In addition, the children received a bookmark from Principal Patricia Simone and reading comprehension tips from the Reading Teacher and Librarian.
School PTA President Amy Huang said the PTA mobilized when funding for books was eliminated in the federal Reading is Fundamental program. Through a variety of initiatives the PTA has tried to supplement reading materials. “We want to come up with ways to get books into the children’s homes,” Huang said. “We are going to work as hard as we can to do that.”In this case, the PTA’s Michele DaSilva approached Simon & Schuster, which is based in Manhattan, to provide books for the kids and publisher kindly agreed.
“We thank Simon & Schuster for their generous donation and the PTA for its tireless efforts to help the kids,” Simone said. “The books enrich our reading program, which is the vital foundation for our children’s education and a lifetime of success.”
